English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Usage is the best language teacher. - Marcus Fabius Quintilianus
What is ESP ESP is English as a second language acquisition in specialised contexts. Basic Characteristics of ESP 1. Meets specific needs of the learners. 2. Is designed for specific disciplines and makes use of underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves. 3. Is centred on the language appropriate to these activities in terms of grammar, vocabulary and study skills. 4. Is usually designed for adult learners at an intermediate or advanced level. Teaching ESP How large is the ESP market? How to teach ESP? English-speaking population is increasing in the world and there are millions of people who need to study English for specific purposes. Companies and organizations around the world spend a great deal of time and money to help their employees learn ESP - English for Computers, English for Engineering, English for Biology, English for Medicine, English for Logistics, English for Marketing, English for Tourism, English for Arts, English for Chemistry, English for Aviation, English for Secretaries, English for Nurses, English for Journalists, English for Police, English for Academic Purposes, and English for many other special purposes. The list is endless. To improve efficiency in teaching ESP, it is necessary to implement new, effective methods and approaches. Teachers should consider the following essential facts before starting an ESP course: 1. ESP learners are mature adults with knowledge and experience in their particular fields. Many of them have Masters or even Ph.D. degrees in their specific areas of interests and their needs are very different from the needs of ordinary ESL learners. 2. Learning activities should focus on the content that is important to them therefore, they should be allowed to choose the learning content. 3. There is no age barrier to language improvement. The latest research results showed that adults are better ESL learners than children; especially in the field of ESP. Unfortunately, many adults believe that they are too old for language learning. Such an attitude is a major psychological barrier to effective language progress. An ESP teacher should help the learners to overcome this psychological barrier. 4. Forcing adults to do the types of activities which are found in traditional ESL classrooms would be a big didactic mistake. It would only augment the adult learners’ resistance to language learning. Meaningful writing, such as actual business correspondence, is more useful than assigning non-natural activities like exercises or tests, which are typical of classroom and the traditional business English course. 5. Written and oral English skills should be taught through intensive listening and reading activities. Teaching writing and speaking should be integrated with reading and listening to content that is meaningful to the learners. Please remember that grammar instruction and error correction do not bring about improved precision or smoothness in expression. 6. Small groups of four to five learners and a tutor would be best for discussions about business or other matters. Traditional instructional sessions should be avoided, unless they are lectures in large lecture theatres with the objectives to improve listening and note taking skills. 7. ESP learners can use the Internet and CALL software for self-study purposes very efficiently. With the help of an experienced tutor they can select their own appropriate language learning software at their own level of difficulty, study at their own time and at their own pace. The teacher is the facilitator. 8. Language learning software can assist in memorizing words, phrases, various layouts and structures.
