About e-Books An average person with average talent, ambition and education, can outstrip the most brilliant genius in our society if that person has clear focused goals. - Brian Tracy The e-book publishing industry is growing every year. As we know, e-books are read either on personal computers or on e-book devices, the so-called e-book readers. You can read e-books on your smartphone, too. Most of the e-books are compiled and published by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), Fictionwise, and EPIC. You can also publish your e-books on Amazon. In addition, there are many other good book publishers.
There are many advantages of e-books over conventional books: 1. E-books can be instantly distributed electronically. 2. Not much storage space is needed. 3. There is no need to visit a library or a bookstore. 4. Environmentally friendly; no paper, no ink. 5. Font and text size can be adjusted according to preferences. 6. There is software which can convert written texts into speech. 7. E-books can be read in darkness by using a back-lit device. 8. No margins, no shadows, no unnecessary pages as in a paperback. 9. Comfortable to hold – no book format. 10. Free copies can be made in large quantities. 11. Can be easily published at a low cost by individuals and independent publishers. 12. It costs next to nothing to send an e-book to others. 13. Changes can be made instantly; errors can be corrected easily. 14. Texts can use hyperlinks. How to Make Life Easier If you want to make life a little easier for yourself and your students you should write your own e-textbook. Many books have an increased price because of lots of color photographs and lots of graphics. Try to make things simple. Write your own e-textbook and print it later on paper if necessary. Compared to most textbooks, yours will be half the number of pages and much cheaper. ESL e-Textbook Many schools purchase ESL e-textbooks online. Their price is lower than the price of conventional textbooks and they can help students to develop four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. Electronic Dictionary Your students need practical English grammar reference with colloquialisms, irregular nouns and verbs, synonyms and antonyms, test and exam guides, pronunciation guide, and many other things. Instead of buying so many textbooks, your students can buy small electronic dictionaries. The common problem is that the quality of some of these dictionaries is not good; others are just average in quality, have the wrong words, from time to time; but some of them are quite good. What type of electronic dictionary would you recommend for your students?
