CREATE YOUR JOB

ESL Teacher Reference Desk provides powerful self-employment tools and resources for ESL teachers.  All tools and resources are organized by type or category for quick access.

How to Start

Start to work from home.  Develop your drive to do what you desire. With today's internet technology, unemployment, traffic jams and the desire for flexibility, millions of teachers worldwide take up home-based work. They cut their travel time and stay away from the traffic jams. Those who work from home save more than 40 hours per month in travel time, avoid accidents, avoid stress, enjoy flexibility and relaxed lifestyle; 40 hours per month means 440 hours per year, or 55 working days, if you consider that you work 8 hours per day, 11 months per year! Most ESL teachers are not sure how to start work from home. What are the most suitable self-employment jobs for ESL teachers? How to start and when to start? What are the essentials?

Build a Business

Pick your greatest drive: if you like your business you will always have a drive for it. Remember, life is short and you must start a business that gives you pleasure. The priciest mistake would be to choose the wrong business to begin with. The ‘Do it yourself’ start would be a good way to find out all about your business; it would also make you more capable of handing over work to others in the future when your business expands. Be pragmatic. Do not become tempted by sky-scraping rewards and internet scams. The rewards will definitely come up to you if you choose the right business. Get properly trained before you start your business: conduct internet research, use reliable information from internet directories. If possible, work for a company in a similar business that you are planning to start. Start building your business.

Design a Website

Some people use free web hosting service supported by ads. Such service does not provide a real website. It provides a sub-domain which is not considered as a website. Sub-domains are not suitable for businesses and no security can be guaranteed, therefore you should choose a domain name and find a reliable web host. You have a few options: hire someone to create a website for you; design a website by yourself if you have HTML knowledge; use pre-designed templates and blocks if you have no technical skills.

Create Your Own Virtual Classroom

Schools, colleges and individuals worldwide turned the Internet into a teaching robot. Home-based online tutoring allows you to work at home by investing little capital risk. You do not need your own storefront to start a tutoring business and you do not need a lot of experience to teach. Many of the resources that you need are available online. With the help of internet technology you can create your own virtual classroom and teach in keeping with your own schedule and at your own pace. If you want to create a virtual classroom you need to have the following tools: broadband internet access, audio microphone, speaker, web cam, Whiteboard Software, a digital pen mouse for writing, drawing and highlighting text, and your own website. You also need to get some knowledge about forms of online tutoring.

Translate

There are many international organizations and book publishers that are prepared to pay high salaries to professional translators. However, good quality training is provided at a limited number of universities and professional translators are not available. This profession requires excellent cross-cultural communication experience, competence in at least two languages, as well as deep knowledge and understanding of the specific fields.

Write Textbooks

ESL textbooks have become more expensive over the past two years. If you have some teaching experience and you do not want textbook publishers dictate your curriculum, you can consider the possibility of writing a textbook for your students. However, you should start writing a textbook if you are really devoted to teaching and the process of creative writing attracts you more than the reward.

How to Write, Publish and Sell E-books?

Think about your areas of know-how. Choose a theme for which you have passion, drive. Select your drive and put your soul and pen into action. There are good e-book compilers - easy to use software tools for creating e-books. In addition, you can make a commission by selling other persons’ e-books - with resale rights. Learn how to start. Click here.

Travel Worldwide, Write, Teach, and Make Money

If you like traveling, you have excellent opportunities worldwide. You go to another country and write about whatever you see; you teach English there, you get paid for teaching and you learn a local language for free. You conduct some mini-research about local language and culture, talk to the local people, record their answers, describe results of your research, integrate attractive pictures into your description, publish a book and sell it at a good price. You can publish and sell it either in bookstores, or online in the format of an e-book. You have to decide. Learn more...

Start a School

ESL schools have become businesses that generate billions of dollars every year. Are you the person who will be able to start and run a school successfully? Step-by-step guidance to make your ESL business successful may not work for all. You need to consider certain factors and do your homework before you start an ESL school. More...

Opportunities for ESL Teachers

Apart from ESL teaching in schools, there are many other excellent career opportunities for ESL teachers: interpreter, guide, travel writer, editor, proofreader, publisher, au pair, travel agent, home tutor, lecturer on a vessel, and more...

Advertise Your Business

If you have created your job and you have designed your website, you must advertise it. Having designed a website for your business does not mean automatic success. You need to advertise it. You should conduct some research before advertising your website. It is very important to use effective tools. And more...
