What is American English

The Americans are identical to the British in all respects except, of course, language. - Oscar Wilde

How to Teach American English

Although American English and British English are not different languages, they have differences at various levels such as vocabulary, phonetics and phonology. The most obvious difference is pronunciation and accent. At present, about 80% of everything shown on TV (also on the Internet) is from the United States, therefore most peoples' accents lean more towards the American English accent, not British. And not only accent... There are many other differences between American and British English: lexical, grammatical, socio-cultural, etc.
